Working Mathematically in a Rural Context Working Mathematically in a Rural Context

This website has been established to provide high school teachers with a bank of Working Mathematically activities focusing on a variety of rural pursuits.

Use of such activities in the classroom can

  • heighten students’ engagement with mathematics
  • deepen their understanding
  • demonstrate the usefulness of maths in the real world.

The activities are grouped into three categories:

  • Crop industries
  • Animal industries
  • General.

For each activity you can download brief background information, photographs, teaching notes, a worksheet and an answer sheet. To access the activities, click here.

An introductory video, Mathematics on the Farm, is available here.

This web site is maintained and developed by Assoc. Prof. Mike Mitchelmore (Centre for Research in Mathematics & Science Education) in association with Dr Heather McMaster (Workingmaths). We welcome further contributions to this site. Please send your ideas to:

The materials on this site were initially produced as part of the Australian School Innovation in Science, Technology and Mathematics Project, funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Training as a part of the Boosting Innovation in Science, Technology and Mathematics Teaching (BISTMT) Programme. A report of the work done under that project is available here.
